Frequently Asked Questions
- What is Songstall?
Songstall is essentially a music shop, allowing independent artists to sell their music to their fans and friends. - Why is there no music from famous artists?
Songstall is designed to allow independent musicians to sell their music. There are already many other places you can buy music from big name bands. - Is this site legal?
Yes. We have agreements with every artist on the site, so it is perfectly legal to buy the music from Songstall. - What Format Are The Files In?
All files are downloadable in MP3 format, and should play on most computers and music players. - Can I download the songs more than once?
Yes. When you buy a song, you create a customer account. You can log in to your downloads area for several days and re-download the tracks. - How do I submit my music?
Simply sign up for a free account, and start uploading your music today. It's a very simple process. - Do I get to choose my own Songstall address?
Absolutely! You enter your preferred promotional address name and if it is available your Songstall home page will be www.Songstall.com/yourchosenaddress. You can then give this address out to your fans and at your gigs. - How long does it take to get an account?
No time at all! Unlike other online music services, your account is created instantly and you can begin uploading your music as soon as you've signed up. - How long until my music is available for sale?
Immediately! If you sign up for an account now, you could be making sales in less than 10 minutes! - In what digital formats can I upload my music?
At the moment our system can only process MP3 files. We automatically create a 30-second sample of your songs when you upload them. - Can I upload cover songs?
Only if you have an agreement with the copyright holder and will pay them all relevant royalties. You must have licence to grant to Songstall for creating and making available samples of all your songs. If you are not sure if you have licence for us to do this on your behalf, then you should not upload your cover songs. - Do I retain the rights to my music?
Yes, absolutely. Songstall is a distribution service, not a record label. You retain all rights to your music at all times. - Do I have to sell my music exclusively through Songstall?
No. You retain ownership of your music and can also sell it through any other method you choose. We're here to help you, not to limit your options. - Do I have to submit a full album?
No you do not. If you don't have a full album, you can sell just a single, an EP or a demo. - How many tracks should be on an album?
As many or as few as you want. For these purposes, an album is just a collection of songs, and you can upload as many or as few as you like. So a demo, an EP or a full length record are all "albums". - Is there a limit to how much I can upload?
No. The way we see it, the more you can put online to sell, the better! - Can I upload album artwork?
Yes, it is part of the upload process. The system accepts images up to 5mb in size, in the JPG format. - How much does it cost to sign up?
Nothing! Having an account is free, we only charge you a commission whenever your music is purchased online. See our fees page for more details. - Are there any hidden charges?
Not at all. Songstall only charges a commission on sales. There is no signup or membership fee, and we will not levy any additional charges at any time. - How much will my songs sell for?
It's entirely up to you. You set the sale price for your songs and albums when you upload them, depending on what you think they are worth. When you enter the sale price you'll see how much of that you will receive after we have taken our processing fee, so you'll know how much that price is really worth to you. See our fees page for an example earnings calculator. - How much do I get paid?
You set the price of your tracks, and Songstall will take a commission from each sale. So the amount you get paid will depend on the prices you set, and how many sales you make. See the fees page for details of the Songstall commission rates. - Can I see how many sales I am making?
Yes. This information is available by clicking the "recent sales" link on your account overview page. - How do I get the money I make from selling my music online?
We credit your account each time someone buys your music, minus our processing fee. Each month you are then issued with a statement showing what you sold and how much you earned. For fraud prevention we then allow another month before releasing the funds to your available balance, which you can then request to withdraw via Paypal. - Can I cancel my account?
Yes, at any time, using the link on the Account Overview. Any payments due to you will still be paid after our standard clearance period.
