Alcibiades - The Bob Carter Project
Alcibiades is set in the Peloponnesian war (431- 404 B.C.) between Athens and Sparta. Rising to prominence after the death of Pericles, the great Athenian leader, Alcibiades attracted political enemies who feared his popularity and unconventional lifestyle. After an attempt to remove him from Athens backfired he was accused of the capital offence of sacrilege but denied the opportunity to stand trial before leading a large naval expedition to conquer the island of Sicily. Anticipating conviction, he defected to the Spartans and gave them advice which proved fatal to the Athenian expedition. When life became uncomfortable in Sparta he secured a recall to the Athenian fleet based on the island of Samos and a triumphant return to Athens. However, when Alcibiades resumed naval hostilities in the Aegean with a Spartan fleet supported by Persia, a minor defeat provided the opportunity for his political enemies to sack him. Soon after, Sparta comprehensively defeated the Athenians. Alcibiades now had too many enemies to survive
